The recent book of Dr. Szlajen, “Filosofía Judía y Aborto” (Jewish Philosophy
and Abortion), which was presented at one of the IV KolDor Global Conference
workshops in the current year, has recently been distinguished by “Defensoría
de la Vida Humana”, an Argentinean organization for Human Rights constituted
by lawyers, scientists, physicians, politicians and other prestigious researchers
from various disciplines. This distinction took place at Sociedad Científica
Argentina the past December 4th within the ambit of Rosa Parks’ awards 2008.
In this book, through a meticulous analysis of the status of the zygote, embryo
and fetus under Jewish culture, including their philosophical, legal and historical
perspectives, Dr. Szlajen deals with the question of the abortion on demand
and by means of the monotheistic and pragmatic Jewish Weltanschauung he
transcends the mere theoretical issues and several dilemmas by which this topic
is currently treated. Thus, contributing with different concepts and visions to
the current narrow debate, Dr. Szlajen not only resists to the actual
universalization process, where everything diverse is converted into a uniform
and homogeneous reality, but also shows how the most ancient cultural corpus
living in our days contributes to deal with this vital question, restoring the
importance of the indispensable Jewish particularism in order to construct a
more dialogical, multicultural and free society.
Dr. Szlajen is a member of KolDor network contents’ staff since 2007 and if you
